Outside the Square

An “old and cool country cafe (not fancy)” — their words, not ours. Breakfast, brunch and lunch with Toby’s Estate in the cup, and nobody minding how long you sit there.

Hours Checking…

A cappuccino in a white cup and saucer on a timber table, with a heart poured into the crema and a dusting of chocolate.

Toby’s Estate coffee

Pulled properly, one size or the other. Alternative milks 60c, and the chai is a dirty chai if you ask.

Vegetarian, and then some

A dozen dishes marked vegetarian, gluten-free toast as standard, and staff who are used to coeliac orders.

Kids and dogs sorted

A proper kids menu with babycinos, a play area inside, and shaded outdoor tables where dogs are welcome.

The place

Off the square, on purpose

Mudgee was laid out as a grid — neat blocks, a proper town square, everything where the surveyor said it should go. We’re a little off it, down Mortimer Street, and that suits us.

Inside it’s mismatched and comfortable, with work by local artists on the walls that changes often enough to be worth looking at. It’s family-owned and family-run, which mostly means that if you come twice we’ll remember what you drink.

No white tablecloths. No twenty-minute specials recital. Just good food, made properly, at a price that doesn’t make you flinch.

Come for a long breakfast. Bring the laptop — nobody will hurry you. Bring the kids, there’s a play corner. Bring the dog, there’s shade out front. Park right outside, which in Mudgee on a Saturday is not nothing.

A granola bowl with strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and coconut on a speckled ceramic plate, sitting beside a closed laptop and a phone on a tiled table.
A long breakfast, and no one hurrying you
